So as many of you have noticed, the Zelda series has come to a serious and somewhat frightening halt. The last game to be released was “Phantom Hourglass” for the Nintendo DS which hit selves in October 2007. Since then, there has been no information or game releases on the Zelda franchise besides “Links Crossbow Training” or some of the old Zelda games being re-released for the Wii. What does this tell us? Well Shigeru Myamoto did say in an interview about Twilight Princess that “this would be the last Zelda game of its kind”. Wait What?!
Could Nintendo possibly be taking the Zelda franchise into a new genre of gaming? Could it perhaps being going into a more role-playing style game rather then action/adventure? I must admit that if Nintendo somehow managed to make Zelda into a Massive Multiplayer Online Game, which had the same quality of game play as a game made by Blizzard, I think it could truly be the biggest game of all time. However there are also a lot of things that they could screw up with taking such a renowned game and putting into such a different genre. The chances of a MMO Zelda game on the Wii or even Nintendo’s next console is so unlikely that I would bet my entire video game collection that it won’t happen.
So what exactly could Shigeru Myamotto be meaning by “the last Zelda game of its kind”? This is such a out of the blue comment that I think that Zelda community may be blowing it out of proportion. Nintendo has been known to have made claims which would throw the Video Game industry into a “revolution”. However once it was released to the public what this “revolutionary” idea was it was nothing more then a let down. The biggest even in which this occurred is with the Nintendo Revolution. We were told that this system would change the way we play games forever. Hundreds of rumors spread around the World Wide Web, which were trying to predict the “revolutionary” feature or features of what would become the Wii. My favorite rumor was that of what was going to happen to split screen multiplayer. I had somewhere read that the System was going to be capable of displaying 4 different full screens at 1 time on the same TV. It vaired on where you are sitting in your room, say you were on the far left of the TV you could be player 1 and have a full screen, while player 2 is on the side of the room and they too see a full screen. The concept of the idea was that it would display a different picture for each player, based on your relative position to the screen. Thus the idea of “Split Screen” multiplayer would be gone forever. Now as we all know this is not possible, and it would have to do with the actual TV and not what is being inputted into it.
My point is, is that Nintendo is known for making comments that will put excitement into the fans, and then end up pulling the same rabbit out of a hat.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the Wii is a great idea; however I wouldn’t call its new control system “revolutionary”. The technology which the Wii’s controller is based on is nothing new to world of Science and technology, it has been used for many different things, this was just the first time it was brought into the home and made for commercial use. The Wii may contain a control scheme that no other system at this time provides, but it is so far behind in every other piece of technology that I find it hard to call the system a “revolution” in the world of entertainment.. I must agree I don’t think that graphics, hard drive space and downloadable content is the only thing a system should have. But I do believe that a IDEAL system would contain all of those along with a new “way to play the game”.
I am also tired of the bullshit Nintendo feeds to its consumers and loyal fans. Reggie claiming that the new controller “is the best thing for FPS games since the mouse and keyboard”. I think that the controller could be AMAZING for FPS games; however Nintendo will first of all need to make a FPS game worthy of using it. Red Steel was the biggest let down of all time and I am personally not a Metroid fan so I am not sure how that went down.
If Nintendo was to get a third party developer like Bungie to develop an FPS game that was even ¼ as good as halo, I would be happy. I don’t like comparing systems, but I do believe that Microsoft does have the best third party developers for its console. The fact that many games are not coming out for the Wii because it is so different from the Xbox and the PS3 is a sad truth that we Nintendo fans must come to live with.
I am not sure what Nintendo’s problem is, but when you take a look at the biggest games on the Wii, there all first party games. Mario, Zelda, Metriod, Star Fox, Donkey Kong ect. Hopefully more 3rd party titles will be announced at E3 which will be taking place in a few short days. Along with hopefully a new Zelda game announcement.
